Miles For Mike
"Miles for Mike" is a team my husband, Jad, and I created to raise money for Virginia Commonwealth University's Massey Cancer Center through the annual Ukrops 10K race this April. Jad and I run this race every year, but this year, we wanted to do something special to give back to the program that has done so much for my dad, Mike Penny.
My dad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2017. Since then, he has been bravely battling the disease. In 2024, he was also diagnosed with therapy-related MDS, a rare form of leukemia caused by cancer treatment. Over the years, he has undergone rigorous treatments and procedures, including CAR T-cell immunotherapy and, most recently, a stem cell transplant.
Your donation will go directly to Virginia Commonwealth University's Massey Cancer Center, a place that holds a special place in our hearts. I attended VCU for college, where I eventually met my husband, Jad. We now live in Richmond, and my parents visit us regularly throughout the year.
We are fortunate to have such a reputable and well-regarded cancer center like Massey so close. It has allowed my parents to continue visiting us, even during my dad’s cancer treatments. Mike has relied on Massey for testing and treatments during his visits, and his doctors at MD Anderson in Houston have spoken highly of Massey. In the past, the two institutions have worked together to continue his care when he’s in Richmond.

For 19 years, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k have been making strides in the fight against cancer through the Massey Challenge. The Massey Challenge has raised more than $5 million to advance cancer research with 15,000 participants since 2005.
This year as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and the 25th Anniversary of the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k, presented by Kroger, we are stepping up to the challenge to 10k the MASSEY Way!
