Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a swim-a-thon?
The swim-a-thon is an annual Canterbury tradition where we swim lots of laps, have some fun and raise money for a worthy cause. We do our swim-a-thon right after our team/individual photos.
Is it any different this year than last year?
Once again, we will raise money for VCU’s Massey Cancer Center. You are invited to swim in memory of friend or loved one or to celebrate a brave survivor. This year we hope to raise even more than we did last year! We’re also celebrating our friend and teammate Jack Becker, who is in his third year of treatment and will be swimming alongside us to raise money to fight cancer.
What are the details?
Individual and team photos will start at 8:00 am on Friday, June 29. The swim-a-thon will happen right after photos. All age groups swim at the same time.
How does the fundraising part work? Do we need to get sponsors for each lap or flat donations?
You are not required to sign up sponsors ahead of time, but you may if you choose to. You can opt to swim a certain number of laps or a certain number of minutes. You can set a goal that has personal significance to you –if your loved one passed away from cancer after battling for 36 months, you might decide to swim 36 laps. You can invite friends, family, grandparents, etc. to help us raise money to fight cancer. And if you aren’t able to be there on Friday, June 29th, you can still donate in honor of a loved one. Any and all contributions to our fundraising efforts are very welcome!
If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, we ask that you please donate online. If you don’t need a receipt, we can accept cash and checks on site that day.
How can I let my friend/loved ones know I did this swim-a-thon in their honor?
You can purchase a plain yellow swim cap ($3) and decorate it with a Sharpie and a special message. Take some pictures on the day of the event to send to your loved one—let them know that you are rooting for them in their fight against cancer. A limited number of caps will be available for purchase the morning of the swim-a-thon. And, yes, you can keep wearing your yellow cap as long as you like to honor your loved one.
Will there be snacks? A critical question for most swimmers…
Yes, bagels and juice will be served after the swim-a-thon.
What about the photos?
Southern Smiles will do our team and individual photos. Order form will be provided that morning. If you choose to place an order, they will accept both checks and credit cards on site that day.
And if it rains…?
We will try again for photos and swim-a-thon on Monday, July 2.
