Welcome to my Great Chesapeake Bay Swim Fundraising Page

Mic McConnell
In February, 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma. I had disease all over my body, affecting my urinary tract, my pulmonary artery, and with metastases to the bones of my legs and to my brain. I had surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumor on March 1, 2023. Since then, I have had other surgeries, multiple courses of brain radiation and several hospitalizations.
In May, 2023, it appeared that I was failing my treatment, with the obvious implication that I was likely going to die from cancer. Happily, my treatment only had a delayed effect and I began to improve. As I improved, I increased my physical activity and in November I began swimming for the first time in over four years. I have now had three "clean" PET scans and recently had my first "clean" brain MRI.
To celebrate my recovery, I have decided to participate in The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim on June 9, 2024, a 4.4 mile swim across the Bay near Annapolis, Maryland. I have also decided to use the event to raise money for cancer research.
I have been very fortunate, but not everyone is so lucky. I want to use my good fortune to raise awareness and money for cancer research.
Please join me in supporting this cause.
Every advocate and every dollar matters in the fight against cancer. I'm supporting the life-saving cancer research being conducted by VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.
When you make a donation towards my fundraising goal, you become part of our united Team Massey community that's dedicated to finding a cure.
Will your dollar be the one that cures cancer?
